My office is designed to feel like a welcoming living room. I'll invite you to take off your outdoor shoes and settle onto a couch or chair. I'll offer you a pot of tea and we will set your goal for the session.
If you feel it will be helpful to you, a support person is welcome to join you for any part, or all, of a counselling session. There's a separate comfortable sitting room with books and wifi for someone to wait for you.
Babies are welcome to join and breastfeeding is always ok.
In my years working for a school board I learned that the best way for things to change in the life of a teenager was to involve the parents in some of the counselling journey. I'll invite you to take off your outdoor shoes and settle onto a couch or chair. I'll offer you a pot of tea and we will set your goal for the session.
The plan for counselling will likely include the teenager and parent(s) each having some individual counselling time. There's a separate comfortable sitting room with books and wifi.

This meeting will be approximately 15 minutes and will be in-person, by phone or by video. The goal of this meeting is to help a teenager determine if I might be a good fit before choosing to begin counselling.
As a school-based social worker it was very typical for me to meet with a high school student very briefly before counselling began.
The fee for this meeting is $40. The full amount will be deducted from the fee of the first scheduled counselling session.
Because this is not a counselling session, a consent form will not be signed.
This option may be best if you will benefit from some planned outdoor activity and fresh air. We will meet at my office along the river and spend 45 minutes walking at your pace along the paved waterfront path. We will return to the office to summarize our session on paper.
You're welcome to bring a child in a stroller.
This option may be best if you live outside of the Sarnia area, if you do not feel well enough to attend in person, or if you're fitting a counselling session into a one-hour lunch break.
Video counselling will use Skype because it provides an encrypted platform.

Children and teens are supported to involve parents in the counselling journey.
These sessions have been very useful for parents and their 20-somethings living at home too. (I've struggled to name the service to be inclusive of more families.)
Each session will start by checking in with how you're feeling. Then we will set your goal for this session or continue working on the goals you have already set for the therapy process.
Note that this session is always longer than 1 hour in order to allow time for each person to speak and reflect.
If the child or teen is hesitant to begin counselling, Intro Meeting may be helpful. Just mention this to the therapist.
